- Since its creation in 2021, the Becas BCP program (scholarships) has delivered more than 1,000 scholarships to talented low-income young people.
- The next period to apply for Becas BCP will begin in the second half of this year at www.viabcp.com/becasbcp and will be open until January 2025.
Lima, March 5, 2024.- In line with its commitment to education in the country, BCP granted 70 scholarships to talented young people interested in pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as well as administration and economics programs at the country’s best universities and institutes. According to the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE), the aforementioned areas of study represent Peru’s most sought after and best paid career.
“At BCP, we are convinced that education is the vehicle to achieving the country’s sustainable development. Over a period of more than 12 years, we have granted more than 1,000 scholarships to talented young people with limited resources to study the degree of their dreams. We are happy for these 70 new scholarship recipients because there is no doubt that scholarships are important to breaking the cycle of poverty as we impact positively on the lives of these young scholars, their families and the country,” said Verónica Roca-Rey, Head of Social Responsibility at BCP.
It is important to note that the primary barriers to higher education is poverty. According to the National Survey of Households (ENAHO 2023) only 21.4% of young people access higher education. In the regions, only 3 out of 10 young people access education, according to the Ministry of Education.
Roca-Rey added that the economic factor should not be an impediment to studying, but other points also deserve attention. For example, students need access to a high-quality education and require socio-emotional support to finish their studies successfully.
Becas BCP provides an integral proposition that includes financing and an accompaniment program. The initiative also focuses on the employability of every scholarship recipient. Students can study at the institutions allied with the initiative, which co-finance scholarships, including the Universidad de Lima (UL), Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), Universidad de Piura(UDEP), Universidad del Pacífico (UP), Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC), Universidad de Ciencia y Tecnologia (UTEC), Cibertec, Tecsup, Certus and Toulouse Lautrec, at branches in Lima, Piura, Chiclayo, Trujillo and Arequipa, as applicable.
Becas BCP offers other benefits, including soft skills programs, a Workplace Mentoring effort, social projects and others, so that scholarship recipients can adapt, continue developing their talent, and study in optimum personal and academic conditions.
To date, 48% of scholarship recipients are from the provinces and 41% are women. The program has produced more than 400 graduates from university and vocational schools, 90% of whom are working at well-known companies.
The Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion has indicated that Administration, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, Civil Engineering and Systems Engineering are the most sought-after degree programs among Peruvians. The three engineering fields that offer the best salaries are Systems and Computer Science; Mining, Metallurgy and Oil; and Telecommunications, all of which are accessible through the Becas BCP program. Applications will be open in the second half of the year at www.viabcp.com/becasbcp and will close in January 2025.
